As part of CECA UofT’s January Movie of the Month Social, we got an insight on the importance of community energy generation from watching “We The Power”, a short film by Patagonia. The film discussed how energy generation can be more equitably distributed around the world. From setting up rooftop solar panels to developing renewable energy start up guideline packages, they are able to truly harness human energy for a better future. This way, we will also be able to realize our potential in generating energy at a citizen scale rather relying on governments and companies to building more stable communities.
As part of CECA UofT’s February Movie of the Month Social, we got an insight on the development of renewable energy from watching “Breakthrough in Renewable Energy”, a short film by VPRO documentary. The film discussed how energy prices are decreasing because of increased manufacturing production. The initial shock that solar energy could cost 5¢ not 15¢, which was predicted by fossil fuel companies. The challenge is reducing the fluctuations of energy due to lack of storage facilities and varying weather conditions. One neighbourhood in the Netherlands has a solution. During the day, they collect solar energy and store it in their electric car batteries. Then at night, they power their houses with the energy left on their car batteries after driving.
